Let’s Talk:
Building Community
This extends beyond the fiber community. I often hear things like ‘Anyone is welcome to join us…’ or ‘No one is stopping you…’ But, does this get the intended result? Are you trying to build (verb) community? Let’s talk about how we get there.
First, notice who is and isn't in the room. There are so many intersections of identity: sexuality, mobility, gender, financial, the list goes on. Once you notice you can make intentional choices about including people.
Next, understand that merely refraining from barring entry isn’t enough. Maybe, technically, all marginalized groups are allowed to be present but are they, are we, being included in the decision making; asked what our needs are? Is previous exclusive behavior being acknowledged?
Finally, to create a community that includes and welcomes all there must be a deliberate practice of extending invitations. Not a ‘one off’, limited time offer. Nor an invitation that lacks acknowledgement of past issues and context. Instead, be specific, explaining how you will help keep them safe (like MODERATING THE COMMENTS), and letting them know that you are including them for them not to fill a quota or to have a token or to check a box.
‘Hi, would you like to join my knitting group? We have lots of people who love cables too. Our group is open minded and there are several of us who will speak up if anything weird/microaggresive/racist happens.’
'The space has ramps and plenty of seating.'
'You like what I like (knitting, gaming, plant lovers, etc). We're looking to expand our group and would love for you to join us, is there anything that you need?'
So, which one are you doing? Are you quietly unlocking the door or throwing it open and waving people in? One gives the illusion of community and the other is actually BUILDING it.
